Steps to Success

to Giving Praise
  1. Give it freely and regularly.
You cannot give too much praise. As long as you are sincere about it, people will thrive on it. Praise is fuel for the psyche and people need to have their tanks topped up regularly.

  2. Don't wait for performance.
If you do, you'll never praise anyone! Pick up the positive aspects of people's work. They will then be motivated to improve on their weaknesses (they know what they are).

  3. Be specific.
Pick one very specific aspect of the person's work and describe what you like about it. For example, "I found your monthly report to be very clear and concise."

  4. Own the benefit.
Tell the person why you like what they have done. How did it help you?

  5. Be brief.
There is no need to go on and on. The person will start to feel uncomfortable and so will you (we are not used to saying nice things about each other).
